Dairy Goats: Getting to Know Nubian Goats

Feb 4, 2026 | Blog

If there’s one goat breed most people recognize right away, it’s the Nubian. With their long, floppy ears and expressive faces, Nubian-type goats are hard to miss—and they tend to win people over quickly.

We have several Nubian-type goats and Nubian crossbreeds in our herd, and they bring both richness and personality to farm life. They’re eye-catching, vocal, and known for producing wonderfully rich milk.

Famous for Those Long, Floppy Ears

Nubian goats are known for their distinctive appearance: long, pendulous ears and a slightly rounded (sometimes called “Roman”) nose profile. Their look is one of the reasons they’re so popular and easy to identify.

But their value goes far beyond appearance.

Rich, Creamy Milk

Nubian goats are especially valued in the dairy world for their higher butterfat milk. Butterfat contributes to creaminess and conditioning qualities, which makes Nubian-influenced milk especially well-suited for handcrafted products like:

  • Goat milk soap bars

  • Goat milk lotion

  • Balms and creams

  • Milk-based skincare products

That richness is one of the reasons we love having Nubian lines in our herd mix.

Personality Plus

Nubian-type goats are known for having big personalities. They’re social, expressive, and not shy about sharing their opinions. If they’re excited, hungry, or think you’re late, you’ll probably hear about it.

They’re often:

  • Very people-oriented

  • Interactive and curious

  • Vocal and expressive

  • Full of character

They bring a lot of life to the barn and keep daily chores interesting.

Adaptable and Hardy With Good Care

With proper nutrition, shelter, and routine care, Nubian-type goats do very well across a range of seasons. Like the rest of our herd, they have access to pasture, a draft-free barn area, fresh water, quality hay, and deep bedding.

Consistent care matters more than anything else when it comes to keeping dairy goats healthy and productive.

Healthy Goats Matter More Than Labels

While our Nubian-type goats share many traits of the breed, we want to be open that we do not maintain documented purebred Nubians. Several in our herd are crossbreeds. In our experience, goats are often described as purebred when purchased, but as they mature, you sometimes see traits that suggest mixed lines—and that’s okay with us.

Our focus is on raising healthy dairy goats with strong milk production and good genetics for milking, not on paperwork alone. If a goat is thriving and producing great milk, breed labels matter a lot less to us than health and quality.

From Our Herd to Your Skincare

Milk from our Nubian-influenced goats, along with milk from the rest of our herd, becomes the base for our goat milk soap bars and goat milk lotions. We make our products in small batches using fresh milk and thoughtfully chosen ingredients to create gentle, nourishing skincare.

When you use our products, you’re getting something that starts with real animals, real care, and daily hands-on stewardship—right here on our farm.
