New to our farm: Alpine Dairy goats
Alpine goats may be known for their reliability, but on our farm, they’re best known for their volume.
As we continue sharing more about the different dairy goat breeds on our farm, it felt only right to highlight one of the most dependable and hardworking breeds we raise: Alpine dairy goats.
Alpines may not always be the first breed people recognize by name, but they are one of the most versatile and reliable dairy goats—and a cornerstone of many working goat farms.
Strong, Sturdy, and Built to Thrive
Alpine goats are known for their athletic build and adaptability. Originally developed in mountainous regions, they’re naturally hardy and well-suited for a variety of climates when given proper care.
They’re comfortable moving between pasture and barn, and they handle seasonal changes with ease—making them a great fit for life on our farm.
Excellent, Consistent Milk Producers
One of the reasons Alpine goats are so highly valued is their consistent milk production. They’re known for producing a steady supply of milk over a long lactation period, which is especially important for a working dairy herd.
Their milk is smooth and balanced, making it ideal for:
- Creamy goat milk soap bars
- Nourishing goat milk lotions
- Everyday skincare that’s gentle and reliable
While Alpine milk isn’t always the highest in butterfat, its consistency and quality make it incredibly versatile for handcrafted products.
Calm, Curious Personalities
Alpines tend to be alert, curious, and intelligent goats. They enjoy exploring their surroundings and thrive on routine and interaction.
They’re often:
- Confident but even-tempered
- Easy to work with
- Observant and aware of their environment
These traits make daily care, milking, and handling a smooth part of farm life.
Big Personalities (Yes… the Drama Queens)
While Alpine goats are known for being dependable and hardworking, they also bring plenty of personality to the farm. On our farm, they’re affectionately known as the drama queens.
If an Alpine wants attention—for any reason—they will make sure you know it. Hungry? Bored? Think you’re late with chores? They’re loud, vocal, and not shy about expressing their opinions. When Alpines want something, they don’t whisper… they announce it.
That expressiveness is part of what makes them so engaging. They’re alert, social, and very tuned in to what’s happening around them, which keeps farm life lively and never boring.
Well-Suited for Farm Life
Like all of our goats, Alpines receive the same thoughtful care year-round. They have access to shelter, pasture, plenty of hay, fresh water, and comfortable bedding in every season.
Good nutrition, clean living conditions, and consistent routines are what allow Alpine goats—and all dairy breeds—to stay healthy and productive.
Why We Value Alpine Goats in Our Herd
When building a dairy herd, balance matters. Alpine goats bring strength, dependability, and steady production to our farm. They complement other breeds in our herd and help ensure we have the quality milk we rely on for our products.
Their reliability and resilience make them a breed we deeply appreciate.
While Alpine goats are a recognized dairy breed, it’s worth sharing that our goats may not be documented as purebred Alpines. We don’t purchase goats based on paperwork alone, and over time you sometimes notice traits that suggest a goat may be crossbred—even when they’re described as “purebred.” And that’s okay with us. Our focus is on raising healthy dairy goats with strong milk production, and as long as they’re thriving and producing great milk, we don’t worry too much about labels.
From Our Alpines to Your Skincare
The milk from our Alpine goats, along with milk from the rest of our herd, becomes the base for our goat milk soap bars and goat milk lotions. Each product is handcrafted in small batches using simple, thoughtfully chosen ingredients and fresh milk from goats we care for every day.
If you’re looking for skincare that’s gentle, moisturizing, and rooted in real farm care, you can find our goat milk soaps and lotions available in our online store at RedBarnBathAndBody.com. It’s a simple way to bring a piece of our farm—and the care behind it—into your everyday routine.
