Dairy Goats: Understanding the Different Breeds

Feb 3, 2026 | Blog

Starting With LaMancha Goats

If you’ve ever seen a LaMancha goat for the first time, chances are you noticed their ears—or lack of them. One of the most common questions we get is:

“Why did you cut their ears off?”

We didn’t—and we would never.
That’s simply how LaMancha goats are made.

LaMancha goats are a recognized dairy goat breed known for their very short ears, which are a natural genetic trait. They are born this way, and their ear size is actually part of the breed standard. There are two types of LaMancha ears—gopher ears and elf ears—both of which are completely normal and healthy.

Why We Love LaMancha Goats

Beyond their unique appearance, LaManchas are wonderful dairy goats. They’re known for being friendly, calm, and people-oriented, often seeking out attention and interaction.

LaMancha goats are:

  • Excellent milk producers
  • Known for rich, mild-flavored milk
  • Easygoing and adaptable
  • A favorite for families and small farms

Their milk is especially well-suited for making goat milk soap and lotion because of its smooth, consistent quality.

More Than Just Their Ears

While their ears often steal the spotlight, LaManchas are valued for much more than how they look. Like all good dairy goats, their health, nutrition, and daily care matter far more than any physical trait.

On our farm, LaManchas—and all of our goats—are raised with careful attention year-round. Their comfort, health, and well-being are always the priority, and that care carries through to the milk they produce and the products we make from it.

Coming Up Next: Meet Our Nubian Goats

While LaMancha goats were the perfect place to start, they’re not the only dairy goats on our farm. Tomorrow’s post will take a closer look at Nubian goats, a breed we’ve recently added to our herd.

With their long, floppy ears and rich, creamy milk, Nubians bring something special to our farm, and we’re excited to share why we chose to add them and what makes them such a valued dairy breed. If you enjoy learning about farm life and the animals behind your favorite products, you won’t want to miss it.

From Healthy Goats to Gentle Skincare

No matter the breed, healthy, well-cared-for goats are the foundation of everything we do. The milk from our LaMancha and Nubian goats becomes the base for our goat milk soaps and lotions, crafted to gently cleanse and nourish skin—especially when it needs extra care.

Just as we’re intentional about how we raise our goats, we’re just as intentional about what goes into the products we make. Simple ingredients, thoughtful care, and milk from goats we know and care for—every step matters.

From our herd to your home, it all starts with care.
