How We Care for Our Goats During the Winter Months

Jan 27, 2026 | Blog

When winter settles in and the temperatures drop, one of the questions we hear most is, “How do you keep your goats warm?”
The answer might surprise you: goats are actually quite hardy—when they’re cared for properly.

On our farm, winter care is all about protection, consistency, and comfort, not overcomplicating things. Healthy goats grow great coats, stay active, and continue producing the rich milk we rely on for our soaps and lotions—even in the cold months.

Here’s what winter looks like for our herd.

A Warm, Draft-Free Place to Rest

Our goats always have access to a dry, draft-free section of the barn where they can escape wind, snow, and freezing rain. While cold temperatures alone don’t bother goats much, moisture and drafts can, so keeping their shelter dry and protected is key.

The barn gives them a cozy place to lie down, chew cud, and stay comfortable when winter weather is at its worst.

Freedom to Move and Access the Pasture

Even in winter, our goats aren’t confined. They continue to have access to their normal pasture area, allowing them to move freely, stretch their legs, and enjoy fresh air when conditions allow.

Goats are naturally curious and active animals, and that movement helps keep them healthy year-round. Some days they choose the barn; other days they head outside on their own—goats always know what they need.

Plenty of Hay, All Day Long

During winter, hay becomes the foundation of a goat’s diet. Our goats always have lots of quality hay available, which not only keeps them full but also helps them stay warm. Digestion actually generates heat, so a well-fed goat is a warmer goat.

We make sure hay is clean, dry, and easily accessible so no one goes without.

Fresh Water, Even in Freezing Temps

Cold weather doesn’t stop goats from needing water. They always have access to fresh, clean water, even when temperatures dip below freezing. Staying hydrated is just as important in winter as it is in summer, especially for dairy goats.

Deep Straw Bedding for Comfort and Warmth

One of the simplest—and most effective—ways we keep our goats comfortable is with deep straw bedding. Straw provides insulation from the cold ground and gives the goats a soft, dry place to rest.

We keep bedding clean and layered, which helps retain warmth and keeps everyone comfortable through long winter nights.

Why Winter Care Matters

Caring well for our goats isn’t just about getting through winter—it’s about honoring the animals that provide for our family and our farm. Healthy, content goats produce high-quality milk, and that milk becomes the nourishing soaps and lotions we’re proud to share with you.

Every bar of soap starts long before it reaches the curing rack—it starts here, with warm bedding, full hay racks, fresh water, and goats that are cared for in every season.

Caring for Skin in Winter—Naturally

Just as our goats need a little extra care during the winter months, our skin does too. Cold air, wind, and indoor heating can be especially hard on hands, arms, and faces, often leaving skin feeling dry, tight, or irritated.

That’s where goat milk really shines.

The same rich milk that comes from goats kept warm, well-fed, and comfortable all winter is what we use to create our goat milk soaps and lotions. These products are made to gently cleanse without stripping moisture and to nourish skin that needs a little extra love during the colder months.

If winter weather has your skin feeling dry or sensitive, a simple switch to goat milk soap or adding a nourishing goat milk lotion to your daily routine can make a noticeable difference.

From caring for our goats in the coldest months to caring for your skin at home—every step is rooted in comfort, care, and intention.
